Allocation of drug-treatment funding draws criticism in New York

Minority legislators are raising their voices and demanding a fair share of opiate treatment funding which has shifted to white suburban areas.


An analyst with the drug policy alliance said yesterday at the rally that areas of color have been largely ignored as this plague ravaged their communities for nearly fifty years.

The overwhelming sentiment of attendees was of outraged that it took white communities being affected to shift the conversation of opiate and heroin addiction from criminal activity to a public health issue.

Keith Brown, who ran the Albany needle exchange program, said that the conversation about racial disparity in drug treatment is long overdue.
