City, firefighters heading for arbitration this May

The contract battle between the City of Watertown and the union representing firefighters is likely heading to arbitration in May.

That's according to the Watertown Daily Times, which is reporting that the case is set for later this spring, but an actual court date for the two sides has not yet been determined.
Last summer, City Council demoted eight fire captains as a way to save taxpayers about $100,000 a year. The union is fighting those demotions, claiming council didn't have the power to make such a move.

For years now, the city has been wanting to change the "15 firefighters on duty at all times" rule, which the department continues to fight.
