St. Lawrence County could be closer to upping the legal age for buying tobacco products from 18-years old to 21-years old, with no exceptions, even for military members.
Earlier in the week, the Legislature voted 11-3 in favor of holding a public hearing to give the community a chance to voice opinions. The measure was first proposed by Legislator John Burke of Norfolk, who says 95 percent of smokers start before they reach 21-years old.
Legislature Chair Kevin Acres is against the law change, however, claiming that the only way to prevent smoking is to increase prices on tobacco products.
The public hearing is set for June 5 at 7 p.m. in Canton.
