Will St. Lawrence County increase the legal age to buy cigarettes and tobacco products to 21-years old?
A public hearing has been set up to allow for residents to voice their opinions on the proposal.
If it were to pass, stores could face fines ranging from $300 to over $1,000 if they sell cigs or tobacco to underage customers.
Massena mayor Tim Curry supports upping the age limit, comparing the proposal to safey regulations like the seat belt law.
While Legislator Joe Timmerman is against the move, saying last week that it "tramples...freedom of choice."
The hearing is set for Canton on June 5.
