Cuomo Criticizes Water Commission Again

Gov. Cuomo is criticizing the International Joint Commission once again for its St. Lawrence River water flow management.

According to the Watertown Daily Times, the governor released a statement criticizing the commission for its choice to reduce outflows while water levels on Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River remain high. Earlier this week, the International Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Board of Control, a part of the IJC, reduced outflows from 10,400 cubic meters per second to around 9,900 cubic meters per second. Board officials have said that although the new outflow rate is still high for this time of year, it has been lessened to maintain safe conditions for commercial shipping and recreational boating downstream. The board noted that the outflows will remain as high as possible as water levels continue to decline into the fall. Last month, Gov. Cuomo called on President Trump to fire the American commissioners on the International Joint Commission, arguing they are not qualified for the role.
