A Lewis County factory will be closing its doors later this month, and with it 22 people will either be displaced or lose their job.
WWNY 7 News reports the ReEnergy biomass facility in Lyonsdale is ceasing operations December 29. The company plans to shutter the plant because its "contract to sell renewable energy certificates to the New York State Energy and Development Authority of the North Country" is set to expire.
In total, four employees will be reassigned, with the remaing 18 being laid off. A release from ReEnergy states that the company produced enough electricity per year to "supply approximately 21,000 homes."
The company plans to attempt to repurpose the site, potentially with a renewable fuel oil facility, which could be a job-saver for the employees being laid off.
