An expedited court process has led to an increase in the amount of children being adopted in St. Lawrence County.
That's what officials told the Watertown Daily Times, as a total of 37 children found their adoptive families in 2017, compared to just 16 from the previous year. A change in policy, allowing for adoptions to be continous throughout the year, is being credited for the rise in total adoptions.
Meanwhile, the amount of kids being placed in foster care--meaning they've been taken from their families for a variety of potential reasons--has risen from 154 in 2015 to 188 last year.
Many of those situations are reportedly caused by "drug allegations," forcing the children out of the home.
