Local organization claims Fort Drum had $1.7 billion economic impact on area in 2017

The economic impact of Fort Drum on the north country for 2017 was estimated to be $1.7 billion.

That's according to numbers compiled by the Fort Drum Regional Liason Organization, which says the post has about 18,800 positions while supporting "over 5,600 additional jobs" off site.
Of the three area counties, Jefferson County has the most residents working in some capacity with Fort Drum: nearly 29,000.
Further, Fort Drum--directly or indirectly--is responsible for 22 percent of employment for residents of Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties.
According to 7 News, the Army's estimated impact of Fort Drum is smaller, coming in at $1.2 billion.
